I was first introduced to Denia and Colegio Alfa & Omega by Scott Johnson when he and his wife, Sue, established Denia Bridges Foundation. Scott and I have been in a Men’s church fellowship group together for many years and, with daughters the same ages, we also became friends coaching and supporting our kids in sports. Scott kept our group updated on their efforts to form DBF and along the way I learned more about the time he and his family spent living and volunteering at a very special school in an incredible community on the Mediterranean coast.

In 2017 when he began planning to bring Alfa & Omega’s Study Abroad Program to our community in Northern California he approached me and another member of our fellowship group about each hosting a high school student from Alfa & Omega for a few months. With all we had heard about Denia, and wanting to be supportive of Scott and Sue’s DBF work, it took very little to get us on board. For a few months in 2018 my wife, JuneAn, and I got to know Spain and Denia and A&O very well through the hearts and minds of the three students that came to visit; particularly through the insights of the young man who stayed with us. We cooked together, played games together, navigated High School together, attended Church together and travelled a good part of California together. We got to know him, his family and his home in Spain very well. All while he worked hard to improve his English and I tried with very little success to revive my failed Spanish. I am certain that my wife and I benefitted much more than he did from the experience.

A few months after the students returned home, our family, along with some friends from London, visited Denia and got to see and learn first hand all that we’d heard about.

We spent time with Eunice touring Alfa & Omega and got to know our student’s family and Denia, establishing a connection that will last a lifetime. Although Covid delayed our plans to return in 2020, we did return in 2022 and got to see some of the many improvements that continue at Alfa & Omega.

I have a background in the Hospitality Industry and have been fortunate to have worked in leadership roles in some great places and with some wonderful people across the United States. I hope to see connections with Denia and Alfa & Omega flourish in years ahead.
